you are loved more than you know.
Maybe it was a little cliche to do this on Valentine's Day. Maybe he should have picked another day, for many reasons. But, screw it. He was going to do it and he was going to do it tonight. Valentines Day this year fell on a Monday, which wasn't ideal, as he had to wait all day to do the deed. The ring box was heavy in the pocket of his robe, and he carried it with him all day, contemplating the exact words to choose.
He was glad when the final class let out for the day, and he could freely devote all his brainpower to the task. Not like he'd been focusing very well all day anyhow, he was definitely more distracted than usual. If anyone noticed, they didn't say anything. After classes, he rushed back to his dorm and changed, almost giddy with anticipation.
He rushed back down to the Common Room, intending to scour it for Annabelle. At first, he couldn't find her. Darting up the stairs to the girl's dorm, taking the steps two at a time, he knocked briefly, before bursting in. Catching sight of her, so casually lounged on her bed, made him almost want to laugh. He was sure his blood pressure was off the charts currently.
"Annabelle." He said, his voice edged with anxiety that she probably recognized. He fidgeted in place, looking at her. "I think we need to pay the Tree a visit." He insisted, naming the pillar that marked the first formal commemoration of his devotion to her. "Please?" He asked, holding out a hand for her to take.

Timing: Valentines Day 2011
Annabelle sat on her bed in her dorm, flipping once more through a magazine. She wasn't entirely invested, mostly because they had no good ideas. Anna hadn't been struck by any brilliant plans for today. She couldn't think of a single thing to make today extra special. Not only was it Valentine's Day, but this time last year was the first time Wayland had told her he loved her. He had loved her for years and years. The day was important to her, and Anna was certain it was equally important to him.
Anna shut the glossy pages and tossed them on the ground. Useless magazine. The only thing she could do was nothing special- just to love Wayland as she had every day since she first realised how she felt. It had been a long time. They had been best friends for a long time. She remembered every time he made fun of her for her taste in breakfast dishes, how he had photographed her even when she didn't know. They had built a life together, a life that depended on one another without their knowledge. And Anna couldn't live without him.
Stretching languidly, Anna looked round her room. She hadn't bought him anything. She knew she was enough. More than enough. That her love was the best gift she could give him, as the opposite was true for her. She was just thinking about getting a glass of water and seeking out Wayland when the door to her dorm opened and there he was. His frame seemed even larger in the doorway. When he spoke, Anna was on her feet immediately. She sensed the anxiety in his voice. She was by his side in an instant.
"Yes, of course. Are you okay?" asked Anna, concern etched in her features. She placed her hand on his cheek, her thumb moving across his prominent cheek bones. "Lets go," she said with a smile, taking his hand and kissing him deeply rather than leading the way.

He didn't even know what he was going to say, when he finally found her and lead her out to the Tree. He had a vague idea in his mind, of course, but it was hardly fully formed. Likely, he'd just say the first thing that came to his mind, probably with only a mild sense of coherence. Still, he wanted to do it. For, as nervous as he felt and as he was scanning the Common Room for her, he knew this was right. He was more sure of this than anything he'd ever done in his life.
Bursting into the girl's dorm, he was glad for it's emptiness. Anna must have sensed the edge to his voice - it would have been impossible for her not to detect it, and she was instantly on her feet. "I'm fine." He assured her, in a quick, clipped tone. He wanted to get outside, he wanted to...move things along. For once, the kiss pressed to his lips wasn't his biggest concern, though he still gratefully returned it.
He squeezed her hand in his, pulling her towards the doorway. "I just think it's important to remember our....roots....don't you?" He asked, glancing sideways at her. He propelled them down the stairs, through the common room, and out of the portrait hole, his anxiety making his pace even faster than usual. She was definitely going to guess something was up.

Annabelle narrowed her eyes. She wasn't the sort of person to just drop a subject, Wayland knew that. "Are you sure? You look... not okay," she said, incapable of finding the proper term to describe what she saw in him just now. He kissed her back, though he didn't seem too interested in it. That was a first. From the moment they had started dating, they had always been physical and flamboyant. She searched her mind to figure out if she had done anything. "Did I do something? Or say something? You know I just can't hold my tongue around that Shephard girl, she just gets me going and I feel bad for being mean to her but I can't help it and I'm sorry," said Annabelle in very quick succession.
Confused, Anna allowed herself to be led through the corridors. "Roots? Is that a double meaning or something? Trees have roots, yeah," she said. Her heart was beating very fast and her palms were beginning to sweat. Why was he bringing her to the Tree though? They had carved their names into the bark, knowing their love would last beyond their own lifespans. She had visited it several times since then, reminding herself that this was actually real and not some sort of dream. That Wayland would want to be with her so badly, for so long, that he had made a lasting impression in nature.
Was that it? Did he want to erase that? He had been acting so strange lately. Anna couldn't put her finger on it exactly. Had he finally decided that enough was enough? That her mood swings were too much to handle? That she would be better off without him. "Wayland, wait," said Anna, pulling him to a stop. She had worked herself up into such a state that she felt a prickling sensation behind her eyes. "I can't live in a world without you," she said, her voice cracking. "What's going on? Please tell me. Please," she begged.

Growing more and more frustrated by the second - he really wanted to do this outside, not within the castle walls, he tried to tug her along more. "Really, I'm fine. I promise. It'll all make sense soon if you just come outside with me." He said, practically begging at this point. She had to make this difficult, of course. That was Annabelle Wolfe for you - never taking the easy way out of any situation. He could sense her panic rising, and stopped their progression, turning to face her, reaching to touch her cheek briefly. "You didn't do anything, love. You're.....perfect." He assured her, hoping to quell her worries.
"Now please, please, let's go outside." He said, turning to continue their journey outdoors. He mused over her question, not having realized he'd made a pun of sorts with the roots thing. "Huh. I guess it could have double meaning, if you wanted it to." He said, though he was only half paying attention to the conversation. Half of his mind was on the event ahead, of course. He was glad they were moving again, making progress. But he was also more nervous than he had ever been before.
What if she said no? What if she thought they were too young? What if....what if she didn't want to spend forever with him? Was he just a phase for her to outgrow, a thing for her to get bored of? He knew they had promised forever to each other in the past and he honestly believed those words, but, right now, his mind was racing into terrible places and his stomach was in knots.
He was pulled to another abrupt stop by Annabelle, who looked more panicked than ever. Glancing around, he saw they'd at least made it to the first floor. He turned back to her, giving an exasperated sigh. "I just wanted to make today special, okay? I have something to show you. We just have to be outside. C'mon, we're almost there. Everything's going to be okay, I promise." He said, squeezing her hand in his and urging them to move forward again.

Normally, Wayland's assurances would assuage her worry but this was too deep seated to be quelled by a few words. "You're perfect and we're perfect together," said Anna after a moment, continuing along the staircase. Her heart was pounding and still that thread of worry held strong within her. This strange acting Wayland had replaced hers for some time now, and she just wanted the headstrong, brilliant, devious Wayland back. Her Wayland.
Anna managed to keep her mouth shut for quite some time, but couldn't continue as soon as the chilly evening air hit them. Only a few steps out the door and she stopped him again, her fear reaching a fever pitch. "But you've been acting strange for ages. I miss you," she said, chewing nervously on the inside of her pitch. She knew that he knew just how nervous she was. She needed to know the truth. "You promise everything will be okay?" she added in a quiet voice. "Okay for the rest of forever?" she asked.
Somehow, Anna felt better by this point. Whatever happened happened. And things happened for a reason. She just had to believe that everything would sort itself out in the end. She took a deep breath and continued forwards, this time leading the way towards the Tree. The rest of the journey was made in silence, though not an altogether uncomfortable one. As soon as they reached their destination, Annabelle reached out and traced the words etched in the bark. She glanced over at Wayland, an expectant look upon her features. The time was now to find out what had been causing him such distress.

He had no choice but to roll his eyes at her when she called him perfect. He was a collection of imperfections, at best. But she had always loved him for those, and eh felt like it'd be a waste of both of their time to try and point that out. "We are perfect." He replied. He could at least agree on that point.
He was so close to the door now he could feel the cool air on his reddened face. However, she was still delaying them. He wanted to pick her up and drag her outside, but it hardly seemed appropriate currently. He needed her in a pleasant mood, not one of worry. "I promise. For the rest of forever." He said, his voice persistent and firm.
Now, she took the lead, allowing him to follow her hastened pace as the moved outdoors. In no time, they had covered the distance to the Tree, it was on the treeline nearest the grounds, and not that hard to find when you knew what you were looking for. He took a deep breath as they neared the tree, meeting her gaze. Another deep breath followed.
"Annabelle Wolfe. You know how much I love you. You know how much you mean to me. You're the light that broke through the darkness in my mind, you're the only thing I see when I close my eyes. I.....am nothing without you, and I am not afraid to admit that. I want to show you how committed to our forever I am." He began, choosing each word carefully.
At the end, he paused for a moment, fishing the ring box from his jacket pocket. He decided to go the traditional route, kneeling down on his right knee. He presented the box to her, looking up at her face, gauging every reaction. "Please, please say you'll marry me, love." He finished, his hand shaking slightly as he waited for her response.

Anna stopped Wayland one last time, then led the rest of the way to their tree. The last leg of the journey was made in silence, and Anna didn't think she could find her voice. She was nervous still, but calmed somewhat. Either way, she would find out what had been going on in Wayland's head the past few days. She hated not knowing everything about him, especially since she was an open book. She was sure there was a good reason for him to be keeping things from her, but that didn't mean she had to like it.
Anna traced the words they had written. First, what Wayland had written years and years ago. Their initials. And below that, the infinity symbol. Annabelle and Wayland. Wayland and Annabelle. An inseparable duo since the day they had been thrown together in the Great Hall. Anna had collapsed in the empty seat beside Wayland at the Welcoming Feast. She looked at him and he looked at her, and still they said nothing. Annabelle had the sense to remain silent as Wayland took a few deep breaths and started speaking.
Time stood still around them as Wayland sunk to his knee. He offered her a small velvet box, with a sparkling ring set inside it. She stared at it, her lips parted in shock. Whatever she had been expecting, it was not this. Of course, Anna knew she wanted to spend forever with Wayland. Once she had sorted out just how deep her feelings went for him last year, she knew. They had known each other for so long, Wayland was a permanent fixture in her life. It wasn't a question of how long they had dated or any sort of societal rules. It was a deep seated feeling of rightness. That all of the moments and pieces of time had led up to this very moment in this very universe.
Realising she had been silent for some time, Anna swallowed thickly. The tears that had pricked the back of her eyes streamed freely down her cheeks now, but they were tears of joy. She nodded, sinking down to her own knees. "Yes." She nodded again, laughing. "Yes, I will marry you, Wayland. I will always love you," said Anna, throwing her arms around his neck and squeezing him tightly. She sat back on her knees and offered him her left hand so that she could proudly wear their symbol of forever.

The ring was actually nicer than anything he could have afforded on his own. It had been given to him by his adoptive mum, it had been her mother's. He had been surprised at the gesture, thinking that she would have saved the family heirloom for the child in their family who actually shared her blood.
However, she had told him that the way he and Annabelle were with each other, they way they complimented each other - it reminded her of how in love her own parents had been before they had passed. She had warned him to choose the right time, and didn't exactly condone an early engagement, but had a gut feeling that it would work out. Izabel had caught sight of the exchange taking place over the dining room table, one day in late June, and practically squealed as she realized what the ring symbolized.
He hadn't told anyone that the intended night was tonight, though, he hadn't wanted to ruin the surprise. Besides, the only people he would have told would have been Damien or Izzy, and they were both busy. Izzy with her plants (which she took way too seriously) and Damien with....well, he was weird lately, and Wayland didn't really know what he was dealing with. Perhaps he should have been a better brother and been a little less self-centered. However, tonight was a night to focus on himself, as well as the breathtaking being in front of him.
He watched her sink to her own knees in front of him. He barely heard the word of consent as he exhaled a long gasp of air he hadn't realized he'd been holding in. "Oh, thank goodness." He said, perhaps more relieved than he should have been. He leaned forward from his own knelt position and slipped the ring onto the appropriate finger. Thankfully, it fit just right. "Apparently, that belonged to my Grandma. Well, not technically my....you know what I mean." He said, trying to stop his voice from shaking. "Hey, don't cry, please." He urged, reaching over and wiping a tear off of her left cheek.

Annabelle had not expected this. Surprise was etched into every feature, and her stomach flipped. As Wayland got down on his knee and asked her to be his wife, Anna couldn't identify half the sensations, all of which were nice. She knew that she and Wayland would not be starting a new life together, but turning a page in the book they were writing together. She had always wanted Wayland to be a permanent fixture in her life, and the ring that now sat glittering on her finger was a promise. A symbol that she would be his for the rest of their lives.
Heart swelling, Anna let out a breathless laugh. "How could you think I would say anything other than yes?" she asked, not bothering to wipe the tears off her face. Wayland did it for her. Whenever she was sad, he would wipe away her tears. Whenever she was happy he would be there laughing. Whenever she was lonely, well she never would be again because she had him. And Wayland would never leave her the way Arianna had, and Anna would never leave Wayland. "Not for a million years," she murmured under her breath, smiling at her now fiance.
That was weird to think of, but a good weird. "Now you're my fiance," said Anna, testing out the word on her tongue. She chewed on the inside of her cheek then leaned forward to kiss Wayland, softly and tenderly. Like lovers do. Her left hand rested against his cheek. "Are you afraid?" she murmured, her eyes searching his.

He grinned sheepishly at her question, shrugging and scratching the back of his head. "I dunno. I guess I thought that maybe you'd think it was....too soon. I know we're young, Anna. I know the odds aren't really in our favor. But I don't care." He said, his eyes alight with passion as he spoke his truth. He was so, so happy she had said yes. He wiped the tear from her face and then pulled her closer to him, wrapping his arms around her, which was sort of hard since they were both kneeling. Still, he wanted to be as close as humanly possible right now, it was the only thing that felt natural.
He smiled at the word - her fiance. That was a new word. And soon....well, maybe by the summer after they graduated, over a year away....he'd be her husband. She'd be his wife. What an odd thought. The train was derailed when she kissed him, which distracted him, as per usual. He did pull away after a few moments though, and answered her question without. "I'm not afraid. I've never been so sure of anything in my life." He was serious about this - it was him and her, always. Of that he was sure.
Remembering something, he pulled her up with him as he rose, momentarily dropping her hand and reaching around the trunk of the Tree until he found the glass bottle and two flutes he'd stowed there over the weekend. "I figured such an occasion deserved a toast, right?" He asked, popping the cork before pouring two glasses, handing one to her. "I guess this sort of explains how weird I've been, doesn't it?"He asked, his mind clearly wandering from the toast already.

Annabelle felt almost weightless, so giddy and pleased with the past few minutes. This ring was simply a confirmation of something she already knew- that she was to spend the rest of her life. "I think..." said Anna slowly, examining her finger and the way it glinted even in the meagre sunlight. "I think I always knew deep down that I was meant to be with you." She looked up with a smile. "Like this. As your wife and life partner. I just was never clever enough to figure it out before last year," she said with a laugh.
"The odds are in our favour because we're meant to be," said Anna firmly, believing wholeheartedly in what she was preaching. She kissed him because she could never go very long without doing so. "I'm not afraid either. I will never be afraid again," she said. Her brow furrowed as they rose. She had been quite content on the ground, kissing Wayland and being all romantic and sorts. But she let out a snort of laughter when Wayland brought out the bubbly. "I love you," she said easily, still laughing.
Anna graciously took the glass from him and tapped it to his. "It most certainly does. It is a momentous occasion," said Anna, arching a brow playfully. "To forever with you," said Anna, taking a sip. The bubbles settled on her tongue and left a warm sensation inside her. "It does. I was worried. I wanted to know if something had happened to make you... y'know," she bit her lip as she tried to word it. "Want to go to sleep and not wake up?" She was learning. Or trying, at least.

He shook his head at her, more entertained than anything. "Yeah, you certainly did take a long time to figure it out, didn't you?" He asked, wondering why she had been so clueless for so long. More so, he wondered how she could have missed it - he had not been subtle with his affections. He'd been there at every turn, waiting to help her. He'd always been there, even when other guys had been the ones to hold her hand or her heart.
When he brought out the champagne, that only seemed to brighten her smile more. She was speaking to him but not a lot of the words were making all that much sense, he was mostly distracted by the deep sense of relief bubbling in his stomach. He poured the two glasses, stealing another kiss from her as he did so, and she accepted hers. "I love you too, Annabelle Wolfe. I always have, I always will." He said, replying to her sentiment with equal passion.
He expressed his own relief over his odd mood suddenly making sense, he felt so bad for the way he'd acted the other night at the Valentine's Day event. "I'm so sorry I was acting so oddly, I was just so nervous." He admitted, hoping desperately that she would forgive him. "To us." He said, clinking the glass against hers and taking his own sip. She expressed her concerns and his gaze darkened, but he shook his head. "No. Not that at all....In fact, I have not felt that way since....us. You make me feel safer, Anna. You make me want to live."

With a laugh, Annabelle nodded her agreement. "Really, sometimes I'm just so thick," she commented. She couldn't help her obliviousness. She knew now, looking back, he had never been subtle. But Anna had always misread his signals as just being a spectacular friend, which he had been to her for so long. No matter what, she couldn't live without him and now she never had to.
Wayland said something about his mood the past few weeks. Anna's smile faltered slightly as she remembered how lost and concerned she had been. But everything was okay now. "Yeah, you scared me though," said Anna slowly. "Let's not make you nervous anymore, how about that," said Anna decisively. If he wasn't nervous, then she would have nothing to worry about. And he wouldn't act so strange as he had the last time. They tapped their glasses together and drank to the momentous occasion of their promised union.
Anna knew that she gave Wayland reason to be alive. That she made his life worth living. She threaded her fingers through his. "I have never struggled as you have, but you have always been a part of my family. Even when my sister left, you were always there. I know I can always trust you," she said, squeezing his hand and taking another sip of her champagne. "So how do we tell people about this? I imagine Izzy would want to throw a party of some sort, and Arya might claw you," said Anna with a giggle. "But I don't care what other people think. I only want to be with you."

It hardly mattered now that she had been oblivious to his initial affections. They were engaged to be married, so clearly they were doing quite alright after all. Even though their first five years or so at Hogwarts had been a little painful due to her not reciprocating the feelings or being aware of them, it didn't matter. He would have waited for her for a time twice as long. "You're just lucky some other girl didn't scoop me up in the meantime." He teased - as if he'd ever had eyes for anyone else.
He didn't know why he'd been so nervous. He'd had a lot of reasons to believe that she'd say yes to him. However, the nerves had persisted, and he'd faltered a little in the last few weeks. It had been an inevitable evolution of the process, really. "I'm sorry. I should have trusted in....us. I should have known you'd say yes. I was just so...not scared. So....apprehensive of what would happen if you reacted poorly." He said, frowning a little at the thought of the negative reaction.
When she wove her hand into his, he felt a smile pulling at his lips, though. She always had a way of bringing him back up, no matter what. "You've always been family to me, Anna, since the day we met. I know it's not blood but none of my family is, not really. What really matters at the end of the day is who's there for you." He said, smiling at her again. "And, yes, Izzy is going to be beside herself. I do hope Arya doesn't cause much harm, though. Will you protect me?"
