i'll have a martini.
It was just post-breakfast on the day after Valentine's Day, and Izabel had just noticed something very curious. As she was exiting the Great Hall, and turned to wave over at Wayland and Annabelle at the Gryffindor table, as she so often did, she caught sight of a particular gleam on Annabelle's finger. It could have been a trick of light, as she was several feet away still. But, she had to investigate. Moving closer to the couple, who was, as usual, glued to each other's side, she shrieked a little when she saw it was indeed a ring.
Wayland had proposed. Wayland had proposed. The thought raced through her mind before she could actually get a sentence out. "I-you-why didn't you tell me, you idiot?" She asked, dumbfounded. He shrugged, telling her it had just happened and that they'd not even been engaged that long. He promised he'd intended to tell her as soon as possible, and she rolled her eyes at him. Clearly delayed.
She looped her arm through Annabelle's, smiling brightly at the other girl. "Okay well I'm stealing your fiance for a bit. Guess you're gonna have to go find another way to entertain yourself." She said, clearly quite excited at the prospect of gushing over the ring with Anna. Turning to the blushing-bride-to-be, Izzy gave her her undivided attention now. "So, you're gonna have to tell me the story, since he will not do it justice, I am sure."

Annabelle was starved after the flurry of activity last night. As soon as they woke up, she insisted on breakfast. Then she would find Arya and tell her everything. Her fingernails looked awful as it was. The Great Hall was fairly empty as they entered, but Anna spotted Izzy. She was focused on her breakfast and didn't look up when Anna waved in greeting. Well, they could catch up later. Anna dug into a plate of kippers, eggs and black pudding with Wayland commenting on her horrific palate which she dutifully ignored.
There was a little shriek, and Anna looked up to see the redhead in question dashing over to them in excitement. She couldn't help beaming at Izzy and got up to greet her. Anna pressed a kiss into Wayland's cheek and happily went along with Izzy's wishes. "See you in class, love," she murmured as they left the Great Hall together, her breakfast only half eaten. Anna snatched up a bit of toast as she passed the end of the table with Izzy. Though the other girl was a year younger and in Slytherin, the pair had forged a proper bond. Not only was she Wayland's sister, but she was funny and vibrant as the sun.
Anna led the way onto the grounds, the day more mild than usual. She looked from Izzy to the sparkle on her hand, unable to contain her smile. "Well, he's been acting so weird lately, I couldn't figure out what was wrong. After Saturday..." she shivered at the memory. "I was furious he left me for that Shephard girl, even though I know why now. Bit messy, but still. He found me yesterday all nervous and I was getting proper worried that he y'know, may be depressed again or something. That I wasn't enough to make him want to live. What a nightmare that would be, but anyways. Then he took me down to the forest where we'd carved our initials into a tree and he asked me to marry him! And then we had champagne because it tastes nice," said Anna, finishing her tale rather lamely. "Did you know?"

Izabel watched the exchange of goodbyes between the couple, more awestruck than anything. She'd seen them interact before, obviously, and seen the tenderness shared in those interactions - Wayland was truly a different person around Annabelle, he was the best version of himself. She loved seeing them together. If could ever meet someone who looked at her the way Wayland looked at Annabelle, she'd marry that guy in half a second.
She looped her arm happily through Anna's as the brunette pulled them outside. She was all ears as Anna recounted the tale, her hazel eyes attentive. She was bursting with excitement - she was going to have a sister! Herself and Anna had always been close, thanks to his friendship with Wayland. However, now it would be official. And she was so, so happy.
When Anna expressed concern of Wayland possibly falling into his depression, Izzy shook her head adamantly, actually interrupting the girl at that point. "No! I promise you, he hasn't had that darkness in him since you two....became official. He is so much happier with you, you have to realize that." She said, trying to make Annabelle believe in her words. Izzy had seen the transformation in her brother's demeanor with her own two eyes, and it was a remarkable change to behold.
Anna asked if she had known, and Izzy stopped their progress at that point, looking up at the older girl. "It's a shame he acted like such a nut during the dance, that's for sure. And I knew he had the ring, I know mom gave it to him, but I didn't know when he was going to do it. Were you surprised? Or did you see it coming at all?" She asked, curious to know every detail.

Anna exhaled, relieved. "Yeah, he said that. I'm just... afraid. I didn't know when it was happening like you did. I was always so oblivious," she said, looking away from Izzy. "But you saved him. So thank you, a bit delayed," said Anna with a ghost of a smile. She asked if Izzy had known that Wayland was going to propose. The pair were so close, she thought she knew every detail. But Wayland had not been forthcoming with his plans. It was a surprise to all. "I'm glad he did. I always knew we would be together forever in one shape or form. But this is the best way," she said, looking down at her hand.
A light breeze ruffled Anna's hair and she ran her fingers through it. It was the middle of February, yet it felt like the middle of April. The weather seemed to be in tune with the way she was feeling. Happy and warm and bright. Anna glanced over at Izzy. "I'm just glad I'll finally have a sister that won't desert me," she admitted after a long moment of silence.

She wished she knew the right words to completely convey to Anna the change that she had instilled in Wayland. She had seen his darkness closer than most, and she also understood it way better than anyone else could ever hope to. There was something about being disowned by your own flesh and blood that left a mark on your soul, no matter how young you were when it actually happened. "You're not oblivious, Annabelle. You just...you didn't know what to look for, is all. He doesn't make it easy." She said, placing a hand on the older girl's shoulder in a reassuring gesture. "And, you're welcome. You know I'd go to ends of the Earth to save my family. That includes you too, now." She said, beaming at the Gryffindor.
When Anna spoke of forever, Izzy felt her smile growing even wider, as if that were even possible at this point. She had never seen two people so fully and completely infatuated, and when it was two people who you cared about very much, what could be better? "You two were meant for each other. You make the rest of us want to believe in love again." She said.
It was so pleasant outside, the good weather mirroring the good fortune. She was practically bouncing, so excited, so happy for her brother and her soon to be sister-in-law. However, she frowned a little. Desertion was something she was all too familiar with, and it wasn't something she'd wish on even the most vile of her fellow students. "I didn't know you had a sister. She left?" Izzy asked, unable to mask her curiosity.

As Anna spoke, she realised something very important. For so long, Anna had heard of the keen rivalry between Gryffindor and Slytherin. How the Slytherins mocked the Gryffindors who set them up with tripping jinxes in the corridors. How had things changed so drastically in fifteen years? Anna would never dream of giving Izzy up for anything. Though they had met through Wayland, she would always be more than just Wayland's step sister. She was Anna's friend. It just went to show that preconceived notions were not always true.
Anna grinned. "I suppose it does!" she replied, exultant. "Honestly, this all seems so surreal," she added, looking down at the ring that winked playfully at her from her left hand. The ring that signified forever with Wayland. She looked back at Izzy. "Love is out there. Sometimes right in your face. And you never really know when you're going to find it, even if it has been staring at you for ages," said Anna kindly. She wanted Izzy to be just as happy as she was, but had the feeling she needed closure in other aspects of her life first. Which brought Anna suddenly to her next question.
"Did you manage to find anything? About your family?" she asked in a low voice. It was rather off topic but Anna cared nonetheless. "Yeah. My sister left. Disappeared for a year then wrote us saying she had moved to Asia and was backpacking. It was rubbish, and mum and dad have gone and forgiven her," said Anna bitterly, shaking her head. "You shouldn't just desert your family. You shouldn't up and leave them if you've got the choice to stay."
