timing: Late April 2011
Two months. She had been engaged for two months. Still, it didn't feel real that Wayland wanted her after all this time. That he had never loved anyone but her. In reality, Anna had never loved anyone as much as she loved Wayland, even if she did get distracted with other boys. And that was all they were- distractions. Five years of distractions. Now they just had to make up for lost time. And Anna wanted to make every moment with Wayland last.
It was a mild Saturday. When Anna woke up next to Wayland much earlier than she should have she simply kissed him on the cheek and asked him to meet her by their tree at noon. And with that, she rolled out of his bed and returned to her own dorm. She changed into a skirt and jumper and brushed her teeth before rummaging through her trunk to find her bottle of firewhisky and sister's old blanket. She held the blanket, rubbing the material between her fingers for a long moment. Anna hadn't told anyone outside of Hogwarts about being engaged to Wayland. The whole school knew by now, but she hadn't sent any letters. Anna had a feeling her parents would approve, no matter how much they loved Wayland.
Besides her parents, Anna had also neglected to tell her sister. Ever since Arianna had left her without a word, Anna had withheld her forgiveness. Did her sister even deserve to know that she had come to this milestone? Biting her lip, Anna tucked the blanket and bottle into her bag and closed the trunk. That was a thought for another time. In the meantime, Anna made her way down to the kitchens to spend some time with the house elves.
Before she knew it, it was half eleven. Anna had spent the morning listening to the elves stories of what they had heard throughout the castle, laughing and drinking tea and eating biscuits. They were so efficient, being able to work and talk to her at the same time. Anna could hardly multitask, and she was usually distracted by Wayland. They prepared a selection of sandwiches and a bag of crisps. She had thought about having some kippers just to annoy him, but decided against it.
Anna waved farewell to the elves and traipsed back up the stairs and out onto the grounds. She looked up and spotted a few patches of clear sky and smiled. This was going to be a good day, she could feel it. Anna crossed the grounds to the edge of the forest, stopping in front of their tree. A smile crossed her lips as she read their initials engraved there. She spread the blanket beneath it and dropped her bag rather unceremoniously, forgetting the firewhisky. There was an unpleasant clink, but as Anna dashed to see if the glass had broken she was relieved to find it had not.
Now all there was to do was wait for Wayland to join her. She sat with her legs tucked under her, and looked up at the canopy of trees. This would be one of a collection of moments that were over too fast. But she would make every one last, as long as they would both live. That was their promise to one another. To love each other for the rest of their lives. Anna glanced towards the castle, squinting to try to make out the tall gangly form of her fiancé.
