Outside was Lysander's favourite place to be. And it was nice enough weather in April that he didn't need to be bundled in all sorts of different clothes to be outside. Which was good, because he didn't really fancy getting a cold. Those were no fun. Because then mum fussed, and he had to stay inside, and get better. And that was boring. Unless Lorcan or his parents played games with him. But that was still boring.
He was lying in the grass next to a pond in the garden, running his fingers along the top of the water and watching some of the fish swimming around. Being a fish could be cool - being able to swim around all day. He liked swimming. Maybe the weather would warm up enough soon that they could go swimming...
Was it possible to turn into a fish? Maybe he could ask mum or dad. Then he'd be able to swim really well and wouldn't need to come up for breath. That seemed like it would be fun. He kept swirling his fingers in the water.

The weather was nice, so Luna didn’t want to spend the day indoors. Apparently her sons had the same idea as she could currently find neither of them in the house. Had Rolf wandered off with them? She did suppose that was entirely possible, but she would check the backyard first. Once outside she spotted a small lump in the grass that was vaguely child shaped, so she wandered over to see which of her children was playing with the pond in the garden. Once she got closer she noticed it was Lysander and plopped herself down next to him. Was he just watching the fish or was he pondering something else while he happened to be staring at them? It was always hard to tell which it was.
She reached over and ruffled his hair a little. ”What’cha thinking about Lysander?” she asked him curiously. Maybe he would tell her, or maybe he wouldn’t. That was also fine, though hopefully she didn’t startle him into falling into the pond. That would be unfortunate. Hopefully he heard her sit down next to him, she hadn’t tried to be quiet about it, but perhaps she had been. Maybe Lysander would be up for spending some time with his mum for a bit, that would be nice. She enjoyed spending time with her boys, especially seeing as this was the last April she would get to spend with them for a while. She wasn’t sure they’d still want to spend time with her like this once they were out of Hogwarts, but she did hope they would want to once they graduated.
At least this pond didn't have anything in it that was going to eat his fingers. The same could not be said for one of the other ponds. Or some of the other creatures if you made them too grumpy. With the exception of chasing Kneazles up trees, Lysander was usually pretty good with keeping all the creatures happy with him. He had had lots of practice from mum and dad after all. Speaking of his parents, there was mum! He turned his head slightly to look at her, still swirling his hand in the water.
"I was wondering if I could turn into a fish," he said, as though it was a perfectly sensible question, and maybe it was for an eleven year old. "And then I could go swimming without having to come up to breathe." He did like to see how far he could swim before his body got grumpy with him. Maybe being able to turn into a fish when he went swimming would be good. If it was possible, than mum would definitely know.

Luna had sat herself next to one of her twins, and idly wondered if the other one was keeping out of trouble. The two of them were quite a handful after all, so she was always concerned about what sort of shenanigans they might be up to when they weren’t both in sight. Lysander seemed to be attempting to slightly tease the fish, or perhaps he was just playing in the water and didn’t intend to look like a worm. Either way, she wondered what it was he was thinking about. Was he willing to tell her or was he just contemplating his inevitable trip to Hogwarts at this point? It was always hard to say with them.
He apparently was wondering about turning into a fish. Oh, well that was unexpected, but she did suppose it made sense considering he was staring into the water. He commented upon swimming without having to come up for air and she nodded. ”Well, if your animagus form is a fish you could turn into one, and there’s a transfiguration spell for turning your head into a shark. I’ve seen it used once, but I don’t know the actual spell for it,” she said with a slight smile at her small boy. ”If all you want to do is swim without having to come up for air though, I’d suggest gillyweed. You get gills and flippers and webbed hands without having to turn into a tiny fish that might get eaten,” she said simply. Perhaps she should get him some so that he could try it out? ”Neville probably has some, I could ask him for a bit for you to try?” she suggested with a raised eyebrow.
If he was a fish then he could swim forever and ever. And not even in the pond. He could swim in bigger bits of water and go exploring and - oh but if you were a fish and swam in the ocean would you get eaten? He didn't want to get eaten. That didn't sound like it could be very nice. He frowned a little. Okay no being a fish in the ocean. But maybe a fish in the pond. Because the pond would be so much bigger if he was just a small fish.
"How do you know what your animagus form is?" he asked curiously. Wait. A shark head? His eyes widened, picturing it. "Woaaaah cool. When did you see that?" He wanted to try that. Not that he could cast any spells yet. But he'd learn once he knew magic. That was coming up kind of soon. He'd nearly be at Hogwarts. It was going to be weird, being away from home and from his parents. It was exciting, but it was still weird. He was going to miss his mum. And his dad. But at least he would be going with Lorc. "Ooooh." The gillyweed sounded like fun. It was like being a fish without being a fish. Mum could get him some? He perked up. "That'd be great!" he said excitedly. That would be so much fun.

Lysander asked about Animagus forms, and well she didn’t really have a good answer for him. ”You don’t really know until you turn into your Animagus form what it will be, and it takes lots of training to learn how to do that,” she said with a slight frown. She didn’t know what hers was, but she did know what he patronus was, maybe they were similar? Then they were talking about a shark headed person and she laughed a little. ”The triwizard tournament in my third year. Victor Krum turned his head into a shark to be able to breathe underwater for the hour long challenge,” she said with a shrug. She wasn’t sure how he managed it, and wasn’t sure what sort of things suddenly being half shark did to one’s mind, but he seemed to be relatively unaffected by it from what she could tell. It was an effective way to go about things sure, but she wasn’t sure it was really the most conventional. That was fine though, she was also pretty unconventional most of the time.
She offered to get him some gillyweed from Neville, and he seemed to be very interested in such so that meant she had a letter to write. ”I’ll owl him about it, should be easy enough to get ahold of for you to try. Fair warning though, I’ve heard it tastes terrible,” she said with a slight smile. If he was willing to endure that though she was willing to let him turn into a finned salamander for a bit.
Being able to turn into an animal sounded interesting. Maybe he could try to do that. Except then mum started talking about it took a lot of training. And he didn't know how to use magic yet, so that seemed like it would be a very very very long way away. Maybe he could try thinking about it again when he was older? "What if you did all the training, and then got something boring like..." he paused, trying to think of a boring animal. "I don't know. Something boring." All the animals that he could think of in that moment would make for interesting animal forms. "What did they have to do underwater?" he asked. Listening mum talk about things that had been going on when she was at school was interesting. Maybe fun interesting things would happen when he was at school? That would be cool.
Tasted terrible? He scrunched his nose. "Terrible like broccoli terrible?" he asked. "Or worse?" Because broccoli was definitely terrible enough already. It was not a vegetable that he was a fan of. But maybe it would be worth it if it meant that he could breath underwater for a little bit. He'd need a big area of water to explore in then, wouldn't he? He might be a bit big for this pond here.

Lysander commented about possibly turning into a boring animal, but couldn’t come up with any examples of an animal that would be boring to turn into, so she giggled a bit. ”There’s no such thing as a boring animal form I don’t think,” she said with a smile at her son. ”Regardless of what you turn into, I think it would be rather exciting,” she said with a shrug. It didn’t matter what the animal ended up being, the fact that you were able to perform such a feat at all was pretty exciting wasn’t it? She certainly thought so, but really had never given a whole lot of thought into becoming an Animagus. Perhaps she should look into it more? She knew it took a lot of studying in the art of transfiguration, but that was about it. ”The only thing I could possibly think of that would be boring is a worm, but I sincerely doubt anyone has that as an Animagus form,” she pointed out idly.
Then he asked about the tournament and what they had to do underwater. ”They had to find a treasure that the mermaids took, which was either a friend or girlfriend or sister depending on the champion,” she explained. He asked about the taste of gillyweed and she shrugged. ”If I had to guess I would say it probably tastes similar to kelp. Some green and slightly viney plant. Could be similar to broccoli,” she mused idly. Maybe he wouldn’t want it now? Oh well, she’d rather have him say so now rather than have him put it in his mouth and decide it wasn’t worth it at that point. "I can't imagine it tastes worse than polyjuice potion at lest. I just know Harry had a rather unpleasant look on his face after sticking it in his mouth," she said simply.
All animals were great. All of them. Things were always better when there were animals everywhere. Though he supposed turning into some animals would be a lot more exciting than turning into other ones, but being able to turn into an animal in general would be fun, wouldn't it? It seemed like it would be fun. "I agree," he said, nodding firmly. It was good that he was having the same thoughts as mum. Maybe that meant that he was right? Oh a worm. "That would be boring," he agreed, thinking about it. "And you might get stood on." he frowned a little. "If you turned into a worm, and then got squished, what would happen?" Would you just be a very squished person? Would you stay as a dead worm? Or would you turn into a dead person? "Or what if you cut the worm in half? Because you know how if you cut worms in half you get too worms? What would happen if you then tried to turn back into a person?"
"Oh." They took people to be treasure? That seemed a little strange. "So they had to go find the people underwater?" he frowned a little bit. That seemed like a weird task. But maybe it had made more sense if you were there and you could watch what it was that was going on? Green and viney? He scrunched his nose. "That sounds gross." But it would make you be able to breath underwater, so maybe it was worth it? Unlike broccoli that was just ick, and didn't give you any special powers. What if all vegetables gave you magical powers? That would be cool. "What's polyjuice potion? What does that do?" he asked curiously. Was it interesting too? Why did the interesting things seem to taste icky?

Luna thought all animals were good, and was glad that Lysander agreed with her on that. Regardless of what your form was, it was likely to have it’s own exciting features. Though, of course, there would always be downsides just like there were to different human traits. He then agreed that a worm would likely be boring, and you could get stood on. Then he was asking about what would happen if you did get stood on as a worm. ”I’d imagine you would die from being crushed,” she said simply. She wasn’t positive of that, but she was pretty sure being stood on would kill a worm and therefor kill the person that was transformed into a worm as well. Then he was asking about being cut in half and she frowned a little. ”As you aren’t an actual worm, that would definitely kill you,” she explained. Though it would be kind of fascinating if it ended up giving you a twin or something, but at the same time that would be very confusing.
”Yes, they had an hour to find their person and get back,” she explained simply. Then she attempted to explain what gillyweed probably tasted like. She had never actually eaten it so she wasn’t sure, but she supposed she could always ask Harry if she was really curious. ”A few moments of grossness get you gills and flippers, so I feel like it’s probably a fair trade,” she pointed out with a slight smile. Then he was asking about Polyjuice potion. ”It turns you into another person for up to an hour,” she said simply. It was used numerous times during the war, though she personally never had to drink the stuff. Most of her friends had though.
That seemed a bit unfortunate. So you were going to have to be really really careful if you turned into an animal to make sure you didn't get hurt. What if you turned into a bird and then a cat caught you? Or a mouse. Or a fish. Just had to stay very very far away from cats. But if he turned into something that was bigger than a cat. There was all sorts of possibilities. "Would you just stay as a dead worm?" he questioned. "Or when you die, do you turn back into a person? And suddenly you're a dead person in half?" That seemed like something that you did not want to accidentally happen. Especially if you were the person that had cut the worm in half.
"Oh!" he said. That sounded kind of fun. Like underwater hide and seek? Being underwater made all sorts of things suddenly much more complicated. His mum made a good point. Maybe he could deal with things being icky and gross if it got him powers to breath underwater? "I guess," he said, frowning a little. He could deal with broccoli if it made him able to breath underwater. "Oh," he said again. Polyjuice sounded interesting. "So pretend to be the person and do things like they do? As a disguise?" he asked. That seemed like a good disguise.

His next question had her thinking. She didn’t know the answer to it, but she didn’t know everything. ”Well you do need magic to turn back I think, so perhaps you would stay dead as a worm? I’m not entirely sure. It would be rather unfortunate for their family I would imagine as they may never know what happened as dead worms don’t generally worry people,” she said with a slight frown. She wasn’t entirely sure how that worked, she didn’t know any animagi that had died while in animal form. ”Perhaps you should ask your transfiguration professor about it, they would probably know more,” she said with a slight shrug.
She explained the challenge, and then what Polyjuice potion did, and he seemed rather interested in it. ”Yes, exactly. Though you still sound like yourself so unless you pick someone whose voice you can mimic it can be super obvious,” she said with a shrug. ”It’s hard to brew correctly, and impersonating others is kind of frowned upon. It was used a lot during the war though to avoid capture,” she explained with a slight smile.
"It would," he agreed, frowning a little bit. That would be sad. Imagine your family dying and not knowing what had happened to them? Not knowing how they had died, whether it had been an accident, or...what. Or if they even had died, and hadn't just been taken. "I will," he said with a nod. That was a good question to ask once he got to school. "And then I'll write home and tell you." He was just going to have to remember that now.
Oh you had to do their voice? That sounded hard. "Is there magic that you can use to copy someone's voice?" Maybe if you just used lots of different types of magic then it would be okay? And you'd be able to trick people. "Oh," he said, as his mum mentioned the war. Trying to avoid capture didn't sound very good. The war didn't sound very good in general. He wanted to ask questions about it, but he wasn't exactly sure what to ask, so instead of chewed on his lip and looked at the grass.

Somehow the topic of conversation had gotten very morbid. How had they even gotten there? Oh well, there wasn’t much to be done about it now other than just move on and see if maybe they could get more information from a professor who would likely know more. He said he’d ask his professor then write to her to tell her what he learned. ”Okay, that sounds good to me. Let me know when you find out,” she said with a smile. She was sure he’d be writing regardless, so he could just put it in one of their regular letters somewhere and that would be fine. Though, that was if he remembered in the first place. She wasn’t sure if he would what with all the classes and things he would be preoccupied with.
”No, and if there was it would probably be outlawed,” she said with a slight frown. ”It was better to just keep quiet while using it,” she said simply. She had seen it used by a number of her friends during the war after all. ”Harry used it a lot, maybe you could ask him more about how he managed next time we’re over there,” she offered with a smile. Though perhaps Lysander didn’t want to know? Or maybe he did and just didn’t know where to start. Of course she would have tried her best to answer the questions he had, but it was possible she couldn’t answer all of them.
