This was Tesla's last train ride to Hogwarts. Something about that thought was freaking him out. He didn't want to deal with this at all. Without thinking, he'd moved his hand to Gabe's. While he hadn't talked to his best friend over summer, he was trying to think of something new. "Gabe." He squeezed Gabe's hand. What else was going on? Hogwarts was almost over and he didn't want to deal with that. It would just be a lot better if he never left the castle.
"I became the Head Boy?" He wasn't sure why it was a question, but it was. At least that was what he figured out. "Rhiannon dumped me." There. The words were finally out of him. He couldn't take them back and he just wanted to collapse. He hadn't been without her since his third year at Hogwarts.
Gabriel and Tesla found each other easily, as they always did, and settled into a compartment. Tesla looked even more uncomfortable than usual, but Gabriel kept a calm expression. "Hey, Tesla," he greeted. Hopefully the other boy would explain what was wrong without being prompted.
And he did. Sort of.
Gabriel said almost immediately, "Congratulations!" to the news of becoming Head Boy, but then he frowned at the news of Tesla being broken up with. "What...what do you mean, she 'dumped you'? What happened?" He furrowed his brows.

Gabe was Tesla's person. Through thick and thin, he knew he could depend on his best friend. Without releasing Gabe's hand, Tesla pinned his Head Boy badge on Gabe's shirt. The truthwas Tesla would lose it in five minutes and Gabe would find it anyway.
"I don't know. She said I'm not serious enough or something. She dumped me and I don't know what to do. We've been together for like three years. I wanted to drop out of Hogwarts and just go play professional Quidditch, which I got an offer to do, but Iris said no. And I kept hearing Professor mom in my head saying she would be proud if I graduated."
ProfessorJames was not his mother and had never once said she'd be proud of him for graduating. But the woman was the best thing in the world and Tesla adored her. When he'd talked to her about his grades and stuff, she hadn't even seemed mad. She was...understanding.
Gabriel watched Tesla pin the badge but didn't protest. There was something powerful about wearing a badge, but he was mostly worried about Tesla losing it. At least this way the thing would stay found.
"You got an offer for professional Quidditch? Tesla, that's fantastic, congratulations!" Gabriel said earnestly. He didn't usually express excitement that well, and now was no different, but his smile and his congratulations were genuine. "Did they say they could wait until after you graduate?"
He'd almost completely forgotten that Tesla was telling him bad news. Gabriel had just been rather focused on his best friend actually having a plan for after Hogwarts, something that he distinctly lacked himself. Instead of saying anything, because he was really bad at saying comforting things, he reached out to embrace the other boy.

As it was, Tesla lost his prefect badge every four minutes. So the head boy badge was going to terrify him. He'd lose it at some point and get in a lot of trouble. So it might just be good if he kept the badge on Gabe. It might be a lot better if he didn't have to worry about the whole ordeal. Maybe he'd just stay in his own little world and not worry about too much else.
"Yeah. It'll be okay for me to finish up." He sort of felt bad about who offered him a spot, since they weren't the best team in the world. But it didn't matter. A professional team thought he was good enough to join them. Sure, he'd been captain since his fifth year of Hogwarts. So this was something else for him to focus on. There were other teams out there. "I didn't sign anything, so if I get a better offer after graduation, I can take it." That had been Edison's idea. Because as it was, Tesla had thought about signing right away.
Gabriel nodded. "That's smart. Smart thinking," he said, offering a complementary pat on the shoulder. "See? Things are shaping up after all. Hogwarts shouldn't be so stressful for you anymore, right?"
Is that how things worked?
What the hell was he going to do after Hogwarts?
"So what now? How are you spending your seventh year?"

Tesla was thankful to have his best friend by his side. How was he going to be spending his seventh year? It was going to be miserable for him, but oh well. He'd have to figure something out. "Yeah. My brothers thought it would be best for me to actually have the degree." So did Iris. He'd thought about dropping out, but that was impossible. Instead other things happened.
"Honestly? I don't know." He'd have to think of something. "I know I'll be playing Quidditch, but that's it. What about you?" At least Gabe had a boyfriend, or whatever.
"Then you'll just have to do your best," Gabriel offered calmly. Now that Tesla had a job picked out already, Hogwarts was going to be a breeze for him. Gabriel didn't envy his best friend, but he was definitely happy for him. "I...."
He swallowed and looked away. "I don't know." He had no idea what he was doing after Hogwarts. He didn't really have any passions besides photography, except maybe astronomy--but how was that a passion? Maybe he could photograph the stars and planets and moons and suns. He would need a special camera and a special telescope.
"I don't know, but that's all right. I'll just do what I always do," Gabriel offered, looking back at Tesla with a smile. It was easier to just not think about it. "Spending time with my best friend, doing well in classes, taking pictures."

Gabe was honestly, the best person in the world. There wasn't anyone else who could stay calm and help him out the way Gabe did. Without thinking though, he wrapped his arms around Gabe. "Well, I'm always free to help you out. We can do like.....trial jobs and stuff like that?" Tesla always loved his best friend. He'd gotten lucky when they were both sorted into the same house. He was even luckier when Gabe decided to be his best friend back.
"You're really the best." His words were close to a whisper and an emotion threatened to choke him. Even with his world being turned more or less upside down, he was thankful to have a friend who could keep him grounded. Gabe was everything a best friend was supposed to be and more. "I'm lucky to have you." His girlfriend might have dumped him, but he still had the best friend in the whole universe.
Gabriel couldn't help the snort that he let out. "Trial jobs. Sounds about right for me."
Tesla's compliments were always strange to Gabriel. He didn't receive compliments much, but most of them were from Tesla. Then again, Tesla complimented everyone, which usually helped him to feel less uncomfortable. He put his arms around Tesla too.
"I'm not really that great," he replied nonchalantly. "But you're definitely lucky to have me," Gabriel teased. "And I'm lucky to have you." Without really thinking about it, he extended his neck to kiss Tesla on the forehead. "Let's talk about happy things, like stars and parties and all the trouble you're going to get into as Head Boy."

They were hugging. This was what being bffs was all about. "Oh you're the best. One in a million." And it sort of hurt that Gabe didn't know that. Because Tesla just needed to try harder to convince his bff that he was the best. But getting a kiss was fantastic and still made him happy. He might not love Gabe like that, but he was all for any amount of physical contact. And for once, he wasn't one forcing stuff on Gabe,
Not that Gabe ever said no.
"Yes! I already planned the floor is lava and I was thinking more pillow forts." There needed to be more things. Like a party. How could he do that? The Christmas one had gone well, but he was sure he could do better! There was always room to improve. "I wanna be the best Head Boy and make Iris proud of me." She'd been head girl last year.
Gabriel was grinning. "Pillow forts can only make Hogwarts a better place," he agreed, only slightly joking. He wasn't one to discourage Tesla's antics: they generally made people happier, even if his childishness rubbed some people the wrong way. It had never bothered him though.
"You're the only Head Boy, so competition is pretty thin. I'm sure Iris would be proud of you either way."

"Why do you think Hogwarts doesn't have more pillow forts? The school really needs more." After all, he seemed to be the only person who seemed to make pillow forts. Sure, he wasn't the only one who played with him. But he was the only one who went through and set stuff up. He wasn't going to complain too loudly, because he fully loved and adored them. But still.
He rolled his eyes thinking about it. "I'm the only Head Boy now. But there was one last year and one next year. Competition is always there." It wasn't even like this was something he really had to look for. Instead it was more or less just always there. Always everywhere he looked.
"Hogwarts doesn't know what it's missing, but you'll show them before you finish," Gabriel said supportively, managing to suppress a playful grin. "And you--you're the greatest contender, right? You've come this far, and Professor James decided you were worthy of being Head Boy.
"You're going to do great things, Tesla, this year and beyond."
