After she'd left his house, Nate hadn't seen or heard from Liliya again. He initially wasn't sure if she was just too busy to do her usual break ins or what, but after a quick chat with Jonas he was sure that she'd just vanished. It worried him greatly. That wasn't the only worrying thing though. From what he'd heard, Duke wasn't taking things all that well. Nate wasn't sure what he could do about that though. He would try to help though, because despite it all, the kid was okay.
Which was how Nate ended up agreeing to having him in his house when Jonas had to go do something or other that Nate hadn't listened to. It was the least he could do until he could actually find Lil and get everything fixed again.
Currently he was eyeing the very upset ten-year-old, unsure of what to say to him. He was probably just going to leave him to his own devices in a moment as long as it wasn't anything dangerous, but for now... "Have you had breakfast?" he asked.

Duke's mother had left him. Duke's mother had decided one day that he wasn't good enough and just left. He wasn't sure how to fix it or even what he would fix. So he'd been under a table. In fact, he'd been under a table since pretty much the first week she was missing. He refused to leave his table and had refused to eat. Instead he now had a pillow and a blanket that his dad had shoved there for him.
But he didn't deserve a pillow or a blanket. He deserved nothing. His mother left because of him. If he hadn't been involved, then she'd still be helping his dad out and everything would be fine. He vaguely heard the question, but felt the same answer he'd been giving any time anyone asked him anything. "Not hungry." Really he just wished Nate would sit. Then he could curl up at Nate's feet. He'd be a better puppy then a person.

Sighing, Nate settled down on the floor near the table. It was easier than bending over to talk to Duke and perhaps it would comfort the young boy in some way. "Jonas says you haven't been eating much lately," he said as he frowned at the child. "It doesn't have to be much. Just a little something." Nate was fairly certain if he didn't feed Duke something, Jonas would try to murder him for failing at taking care of the boy. "You can even eat it under the table if that's what you want."

"I'm safe under the table." He stated, as if Nate could understand this. Because if he'd been a puppy, no one would have left him. And puppies ate under the table. He leaned against Nate slightly. There was some pressure there that just made him feel better. Nate was real. "Are you gonna leave too?" His words were hardly a whisper and he was sure that he'd shatter if Nate said he was leaving Duke.

Frowning at the boy, Nate summoned over the food he'd made before wrapping his free arm around him, trying to offer as much comfort as he could while knowing he wouldn't be enough. "I'm not going anywhere," he promised. At least not while the boy was around. He would eventually have to leave to find her. But for now, he was staying put. "And you are good enough. This is nothing you did. This.... It was something else, and everyone just happened to get dragged along."

He shook his head. He understood that Nate was trying to be nice. Nate was the best person in the world, other then some of the other adults that were approved by Jonas. "No. I'm not good enough and so she left. And later you'll leave. And Uncle Caspian will leave. And then dad will leave. And then I won't have anything else." And he would be alone forever. And then he'd have to go live in a shoe or something.

Tightening his hold, as if that would somehow hold Duke together, Nate shook his head. "Duke, this wasn't anything you did. You've been nothing short of wonderful and Liliya cares about you a lot. This was... there are sometimes adult things that get in the way, and this was one of those. She didn't leave because of you, and none of us are going to leave you." He wasn't sure if that would get the child to understand, but he had to make an effort. One member of their weird, mismatched family was already broken and disappeared, so he couldn't let it happen to another one.

Duke pressed his head closer to Uncle Stranger Danger's chest. It was like he was trying to memorize the way the older male felt, because he knew that Stranger Danger would be the next to leave. "Mom left me." This was the thing he couldn't believe. He had no mothers. He'd never really had a mother. He wanted one and he thought he had one. But she was gone. Which possibly meant she wanted to have a real kid and not some broken replacement.
He was pretty much stuck in a loop, given that he refused to believe she was gone for any reason other then him. "Everyone leaves." Maybe if he just clung to Stranger Danger, it'd be impossible for him to leave too.

Running his fingers lightly through the young boy's hair, Nate tried his best to think of the right thing to say to get through to the child. There had to be something he could say or do that would help. As much as Duke could get on his nerves, Nate had developed a soft spot for him over time. It hurt to see him so torn up. "She won't be gone forever," he said finally after a moment. "I'll bring her back to you, okay?" It would mean leaving himself for a brief time, but he'd all but promised to come back so maybe it would be okay.

If you had asked Duke a year ago who he liked better, he would have said momma. But now it was different because now Uncle Stranger Danger was the one that stayed. Stranger Danger was the one who helped him. "But what if you don't come back?" He was just going to hold onto Uncle Stranger Danger forever. "I don't wanna lose you." He added without too much trouble at all.

Biting back the emotions that threatened to drag him more fully into the moment, Nate looked at the child. "I promise you I will be back," he told him sincerely. "And I promise you that I will bring her back with me." Or die trying. But that wasn't something you were supposed to say to a child so he didn't.

"I can't lose you too." He was barely holding on with the lack of his mother. Not having her hurt a whole lot. Losing one of his uncles would probably kill him. Caspian and Stranger Danger were his favorite two. He was pretty sure that he'd lose everything. "What if you just stay here? I'll sleep on the couch." He'd give up his bed if Stranger Danger would stay.

"You won't lose me, Duke. You haven't lost any of us," he tried to assure him again. It hurt him to see the small boy so broken up over something that wasn't even his fault. It would probably hurt even if it was. "I can't stay here though," he went on. It wasn't what the child would want to hear, but it was the truth. "I have to go find her. For your sake and for my own."

Everything in Duke's chest hurt. He wanted to just lean into uncle stranger danger and not worry about anything else. It shouldn't be too bad for him but he wasn't sure what good could happen. "If you bring her back and she doesn't wanna be back, she'll just leave again." He stated, leaning closer to Nathaniel. When he first met this uncle of his, he hadn't been sure. But he did like Stranger Danger. He felt safe.
When Duke spoke, it was verbalizing one of the many things Nate himself was worried about. There was always a chance that he'd succeed in tracking Liliya down only to fail at getting her home again. But that wasn't something he could give much thought to. There was nothing that would stop him from trying. He had to do at least that much. "Then we'll just have to make sure we give her a reason to want to stay, won't we?"
