She had not been back in London for very long. She had gone home - very briefly - and then set out over to Jonas'. Part of her wondered whether she should have given him some warning, but she decided not to. It was better to see the reactions directly, wasn't it?
Though, Duke first, if he was around. And then Jonas. She wasn't exactly sure why she had made that call, except that it felt like the right one to make. Who knew how either of them were going to react. Liliya didn't know how she wanted them to react either. It was going to be interesting.
She found him eventually. "Duke?" she said, coming into the room.

Duke hadn't eaten much more then a few bites here or there in a couple of months. Ever since his mother left, he didn't have an appetite. And on top of that, he didn't really want to do anything. His body felt so heavy and he was tired all of the time. So he'd made a small spot for himself under the table and he just curled up there. He never left his table. It was safe there. Nothing bad could happen to him there.
Maybe it was the fact that he hadn't eaten in a few days, but he could have sworn he saw his mother. Only that couldn't be true because she left him. When she realized he wasn't good enough to be her son, she vanished. Really, he wished he could change it, but there was no way to do it. "Mmh not hungry." Although maybe if he hadn't eaten in a bit he should be. The hallucination of his run away mother was obviously a sign that he needed to eat. Or maybe he needed real sleep.
He was sitting under the table. Jonas had mentioned the table in the letters that he had sent, that Liliya had never responded to. The fact that Duke didn't want to move, or to do anything. She had wondered how they were going to respond to her returning, wondered the sort of welcome that she would get, but this was a little bit odd.
"Duke?" she said again, coming to bob down next to the table. She wasn't asking if he was hungry or not, but that was probably something that Jonas said a lot. Trying to get him to eat. "Hey. It's okay."

"No. I don't like it when dad makes the AI look like mom. Turn it off." And he waved a hand sort of at her. This was obviously another one of dad's ways to try to make him eat. He didn't want to eat. He didn't want to do anything. He wanted to just become one with the floor. There had to be a way to do it. Maybe if he just melted himself? He wasn't really sure.
But his dad wasn't turning off the AI. What if it wasn't his dad doing it? What if someone else did it? But Xavier wouldn't hurt him like this. And Uncles Camden and Caspian both had to work. And then Stranger Danger had vanished too. Was he really that unlovable? "Mom left me because I'm not good enough. Make it stop." And he closed his eyes again and pressed his head against his knees.
He thought she was an AI. Liliya blinked. It made her wonder whether Jonas had made the AI look like her when she was away - which was a bit of a weird thought. She might have to talk to Jonas about that one. Probably after the whole 'hey, not dead' conversation that they also needed to have. Details. "I'm not an AI, Duke," she said gently, bobbing down beside him.
At his words, her heart twinged a little bit. "Hey, hey, that's not true. I didn't leave because of you. I left because I had other things I needed to deal with. It wasn't about you. It's me here now, I'm not an AI."

"I'm not enough." He wasn't really listening to her. He should be and he knew that. But it was difficult. He hadn't eaten in awhile. When was the last time Nate was here? He couldn't remember. Time wasn't real. Nothing was real any more. He was just so tired. Maybe he could close his eyes and everything would go back to normal?
If it were Nate or his dad he'd lean against them. Holograms weren't fleshy though and he should go through it. Still, he couldn't help it. On instinct, he leaned and pressed his head against her. And....he didn't fall? What was this voodoo? His little arms (having lost weight from not eating), wrapped around her. "I missed my momma." And it was true. He needed her.
"This had nothing to do with you," she said gently, frowning at the boy. "I didn't leave because of you." There had been several reasons for that, and maybe he was tied up in one of them. But she wasn't going to say that. Everything had gotten out of hand so quickly.
The realisation that she was after the wrong people. And the realisation that there was people here she was fond of. It was an overwhelming collection of emotions, and running away, well, had been the best way to deal with that. "I missed you too, kiddo."

"I'm not enough." He stated again, unsure at why she wasn't really understanding all of this. Oh well. "And soon uncle stranger danger is going to leave me. Then Uncle Caspian. And then dad." And that would hurt. It would all hurt. And he didn't like this. He'd have no one left. Because he already hadn't seen Rory in ages. Sure, Rory went to Hogwarts, but that was obviously just a cover.
He squeezed her tightly. He didn't want to let her go. He didn't think she really missed him. There was no way. He wasn't a good child. He didn't deserve a happy ending. But he wanted to hold onto her. He wanted to remain her only small child.
Pacifying people was not exactly a strenght of Liliya's, mostly because she had spent a great deal of her time around people that she didn't care about. There was no point wasting energy trying to make people feel better if you didn't care if they felt better. Duke was a different case. "None of them are going to leave you," she said firmly. Maybe she had, but she knew they wouldn't. They were better people than she was.
Liliya put her arms around the young boy. "Duke, listen to me," she said. "The reason I left had nothing to do with you. I had things that I had to go and deal with. But I'm back now, and I'm not going anywhere, okay?" At least she didn't think that she was.

Duke took a deep breath as he thought about it. Really, he wasn't sure about a whole ordeal. What all was going on? She'd left. It was natural to assume that anyone else would leave him too. If his own mother had no issue leaving him, then anyone could leave him. Honestly, the only person he assumed wouldn't leave him would be Jonas. His dad was the most fantastic person in the world.
But he couldn't think of words. Instead he just sort of looked past his mother. He couldn't think of what he needed to say. Words were really hard right now.
Dealing with children was hard. And it was not a skill that Liliya had ever learnt, because she didn't need to know it. Making children feel better was never something that she had needed to do. Killing them? That she could do. That actually might be easier. "I'm here. I'm not going anywhere," she repeated.
