timing: Summer 2012
Ellis burst forth from his family home, a backpack over his shoulder. He didn't know where he was going or what he was going to do, but he needed space. He needed to be away from his father. His eyes prickled, but Ellis refused to let tears fall. He should have asked Professor James to stay at Hogwarts. But it didn't matter now, the summer holidays had started. He had written to Iola but hadn't heard back yet. He wondered if he would come across anyone he knew... he honestly doubted it. He wished he had a thestral, he knew they had an excellent sense of direction. Then he could go back to Hogwarts and never come back here again.
With a dwindling sense of purpose, Ellis walked the well known streets of downtown Glasgow. He came to the square and sat on the lip of the statue. Ellis dropped his bag and looked down at the ground. This was stupid. He was thirteen years old. What was he doing out on his own? Surely, the police would come and return him to his father. But he couldn't go back now. He needed time. He looked up, alarmed at the sound of a voice addressing him.
