Edmund was not at all anywhere near impressed about the fact that River had become his boss a couple of months ago. The man was completely hopeless, but apparently some fool had decided that was a good idea. He did not have high hopes for whoever had authorised that decision - or the people that had agreed with it.
Perhaps River would just get sucked in and spit back out, and that would be the end of that. Or would take a wrong turn somewhere in the department and get hopelessly lost, never to be seen until he was dead and decaying. There was several appealing possibilities.
Speaking of... he turned a corner in the department and saw the man up ahead. How unfortunate.

For the first time in his life, River actually felt human. He wasn't in any sort of pain and he hadn't been hospitalized in a couple of weeks. Actually, it was closer to a couple of months. So he'd just gotten this promotion. Maybe spending time with Pixie was just like a magical cure. Because all of a sudden, nothing hurt and everything felt a lot better. But he wasn't trying to press his luck too much. Instead he just needed to keep working.
Of course that meant he had to work with Edmund. The other male still hated him but now there was a weird power flip. River was the boss and that had never been the case. Since the dawn of time, Edmund seemed like the better choice of bosses. But maybe it was the fact that Edmund didn't like people that River got it? Really he shouldn't question such things and he should just stay focused on his job.
"You alright Everhart?" River was still living in the hope that one day Edmund would be his friend. But he sort of started to think it might never happen.
Perhaps by the time that Edmund was old enough to become Head of the Department, River would be out of the way. Or maybe he could just force him out of the way, an accidental encounter that left him unable to lead the department. It wouldn't be that difficult to work out, and especially not in this department. There were so many twists and turns to get lost in... He just really wanted that spot. Not that he was old enough yet.
But what he did know, was that River was useless, and certainly did not deserve to be the boss. How in Merlin's name had there been such a flip? He was not particularly happy about it at all. "I'm fine, thank you," he said curtly. "And how are you?"

River was officially the boss of this man and he wasn't sure what he needed to do or say. This was kind of awkward. After all, Edmund had always been more official then himself. But here they were. "I've been doing alright as well." That was the good thing about being the boss. Work wise was going well. And his personal relationship was going well. There wasn't anything he needed to worry about at all.
"Can I help you?" He wasn't exactly sure what he needed to say to Edmund. The other male hated him, but he was a good employee. And River wouldn't fire anyone just because they hated him. He wasn't that type of person.
"Good," he said in a tone that rather clearly expressed that he did not at all care whether or not River was well. Actually, it would have suited Edmund better if he hadn't been well, because then maybe they'd actually fire him, and replace him with someone who was actually capable of doing their job. He could hope.
Did he have anything that he had to run by the boss? As loath as Edmund was to stand here and talk to him, he was still the boss, and some things did need to be run by him, however unfortunate they were. "I believe that I have everything under control. Unless there is something that you need me to handle?"

River raised an eyebrow at Edmund. He fully understood that the other male had probably expected to get the head spot over River. In fact, he was surprised he got it at all. But he was happy where he was. "No. You're a competent employee." He had no trouble with that at all. He was fine with making sure that everything else worked out just fine.
Competent? Only competent? He would have said that he was a better worker than competent. But what did Styx know? Evidently not much. Edmund raised an eyebrow. "I do not think being a competent employee excludes me from handling things," he commented.

Normally River only asked people to do stuff when they weren't a competent employee. It was his nice way of getting someone to have easy work because sometimes people were idiots. He knew it, but he was a lot nicer then some bosses could be. He never actually told his employees they were being idiots. "No. It doesn't. But it means you're doing your job well and I don't feel the need to attempt to give you an easier task because I worry you'll ruin everything and put everyone else behind."
Why sugar coat anything? This was Edmund after all.
Maybe he would get lucky and River would just drop dead from one of the constant illnesses that he got. That would be nice. And then Edmund wouldn't have to deal with him, and could possibly actually get someone competent in the job. "Right," he said at the man. If he said so. "Then I'll just head off and continue with my job then." So he didn't have to keep looking at him.

River thought about making something up and trying to annoy Edmund. It couldn't be too hard, since the two men normally got on each other's nerves daily. But instead he found himself just not wanting to deal with him at all. "Sounds good with me." With Edmund out of his hair, he could go focus on paperwork and then actually seeing if they needed to hire anyone new or anything else like that.
