Head Auror 1999 to 2004
« Transferred straight from MACUSA as the Head Auror. At first wasn't quite happy about this but still decided to fight through.
" You wanted to see me, sir?" " Oh yes. That's correct. Sit down." " There are no chairs, sir?" Silence and then a hiss. " I knew I forgot something." He was tense, rigid and above all, nervous. Auror Maxwell Whitlam ‘The Whiz Kid’ didn’t get nervous but here he was standing, his posture straight and face emotionless just like his old Navy commander had once told him to all those years ago. He was told he had a bad posture which led to his bad attitude. Fix the posture, fix the attitude. Unfortunately for his commander, this wasn’t the case for Max. No matter what he kept his attitude and the sarcastic comments that got him into trouble. No one thought he’d last long. They all told him that he was not going to last long in the Navy because of his inability to follow orders.
A year later he was a Navy SEAL. Another year later he was a captain and damn good one of that. What Max was, he was a leader. He didn’t seem so at first, not at all. He was lazy, cut corners and he wasn’t diplomatically correct. Paperwork was never filled because that was not what he did. But when he was told to lead a team to a dangerous mission, he took care of them and made sure that everyone got home safely. Even if it meant that he didn’t make it. All of the other guys had families waiting for them. They had a wife and kids who were afraid every day whether or not their father or husband would come back. Max had no one. He had briefings, training and the cold, empty apartment. He would never admit it but he was lonely.
War was everywhere. He saw it everywhere he went. He tried to stop it, hell, they told him to make it stop but he couldn’t. He was a soldier who would follow orders. The Navy was his home. They gave him a name - Pegasus - which he guarded with his life. Max was not to tell a soul. Who would he have to tell? He had no family. He was free. He was free and alone like the winged horse that gave him his name.
The man front of him on the other hand was his commander now. Head Auror Rotschild was eccentric but he got work done. He lead the auror team through the terrors and through the troubles. He was strange, he truly was but he was strict and stern. A true leader. " You are aware of the British counterpart?" Rotschild asked while leaning on his chair, stretching every inch of his already damaged chair. Max nodded. " Yes. Well. " The older man stretched his words and that made Maxwell Whitlam suspicious. There was hesitation on Rotschild's tone and it only could meant that this was not going to end well. " They need a new Head Auror since their last one left and the ones they have now there temporarily is a total mess. Did you also know that raisins are just dried up grapes?" The sudden blurb of words made Max confused. How did any of that make any sense? " Sir, where is this going?" Max asked now. " I offered you. To the British." A very long pause. " Now, I know that comes as along as I've just threw you under the buss but I can assure you it's a very honorable post." That sentence came ten times faster. Maxwell had trouble understanding this. Head Auror? England? Why England? Why in the land of darkness and sourly people? Why would a patriotic man be sent to England? " But – Why – England?" The young man blurted. This wasn't happening. " Yes. England." Orville Rotschild said nodding. " I need someone there who I know will do a good job." " But I can do a good job here." Max protested. " You don't need to send me all the way to – " " Maxwell." The tone of the Head Aurors voice was now deadly. It stopped Max immediately. " You're more than capable of this. That's why I offered you because I know you will do anything that is necessary for your country. I could pick anyone else but I chose you." Was he supposed to be proud of this? Part of him was taken by this but it still made no sense to send him to England. " You and Caspian are exceptional men and both deserve the Head Auror spot when I get the Department Head job. I know that Caspian is going to guard the homeland while you – " Rotschild was pointing at Max with a carrot. Wait – " – You will make sure that the ties between the British and MACUSA stay warm. In case of an emergency." Max was too stubborn to believe that this was still a good idea. It was a promotion. It was a position suited for Maxwell but it still didn't seem right. Apparently, Orville was not done yet. " I also need someone in the inside." That perked Max's ears. " Inside, sir?" " Yes. Inside. Someone. On the inside. Inside of the British Ministry of Magic." " Please stop saying inside." " Right." Brief pause. " Maxwell. This is a good thing." Rotschild took a bite of his carrot that he had been holding for a while now. Max gaped and before he could say anything, Rotschild got up, munching his carrot and held a string to Max. " Hold this." " Sir – " " Hold that, will ya." Rotschild said again. " Preston has been acting up all sloppy so I've got to remind him what this job really is. When I pull that string, he'll be covered in electric eels. Fun, isn't it?" Rotschild giggled and eyed somewhere on the wall. " Oh! It's lunch time!" A pause and in that pause, Orville had already disappared. " Sir? Sir, the string. Sir?!"
