but i survived.
Dani was less than thrilled about the prospect of visiting her dad. As far as she was concerned, he had offered her the ultimate betrayal when he'd basically broken their family. Even though it had been about two years since it all had come to light, Daniella was still angry. She held a lot of anger in her heart for the man she once held so dear.
It wasn't that she hated him. It was quite the opposite, really. She loved him. She loved her dad so much. And to see him so carelessly toss away their family....like her and her mum had meant nothing. Like this girl he had thrown it all away for meant more to him than they ever had. It hurt. She couldn't let go of that so easily.
Still, it was her thirteenth birthday. Her dad had sent an owl saying that he had a gift for her, and managed to get her a bit of a weekend pass for the occasion. She had made her way to the village slowly, unsure. On one hand, she wanted to see him again. She wanted to forgive him. On the other hand, she was still so upset at what he'd done.
She knew the way to the Hog's Head by heart - she'd frequented it during the summer, stony check-ins in between visiting friends. As she made her way down the road, she saw a figure that made her stop dead in her tracks. She stared at the woman approaching her, her hands slowly balling in fists by her sides. "What the hell are you doing here?" She snapped, once Athena was close enough.

i grew up overnight.
In her six months at Hogwarts, Athena hadn't been to the village of Hogsmeade quite as often as she was now that she'd graduated. Or at least as often as she had in the past couple of months, since she'd been graduated for about half a year before she set foot into it again. But the lure of harassing certain people was too strong to fight, as if she wanted to fight it.
Practice had been cut short due to extremely poor weather, so Athena had some free time on her hands. She thought it hadn't been too bad to practice in, because she could still see well enough to hit bludgers at people, but other people disagreed. It was probably because they couldn't see to dodge them. But that wasn't her fault.
Harassment done for the day, she decided to actually explore more of the village. The allure hadn't been so strong when she was a student, so she hadn't gone into most of the shops around her. Maybe she'd hit up a few of them today. At least, that had been the plan until a blonde girl showed up in her path. Oh, this was going to be fun.
Lips already curled into a smirk, the distance between the two females was closed and Athena shook her head at the question. "Am I not allowed to be in a public space?" she returned, though she knew full and well what the child in front of her was referring to.

but i survived.
She didn't know what she'd been expecting to come upon when she returned to her Dad's pub for the first time this term, but it certainly hadn't been the sight of the dark-haired girl wandering down the roadway. Immediately, Dani's features collected into an expression of pure disgust. She couldn't even stand thinking of this girl, so to see her now, in front of her, in the flesh? It was too much.
Whatever Athena thought she was doing, Dani intended to make sure she was positive on how the Hufflepuff viewed her. "I dunno. If I got busted for sleeping with my professor, I might have the good sense not to be in a public space so near a school. May give people the wrong idea. What are you, scouring Hogwarts for more old guys to sleep with? Got bored with the ones your own age?" She asked, scowling at the older girl.

i grew up overnight.
As the younger girl spoke, Athena felt her lips curling into a condescendingly smile and she could have laughed. "How lovely of you to be concerned about my reputation," she said mockingly. "Unfortunately your concern is misplaced because it wasn't my reputation that took the fall. Your dad seems to be handling it gracefully enough though."
Unplanned as it was, Athena had a feeling this meeting would either be a lot of fun for her or a huge headache. Right now, she was leaning towards the first option, with the girl giving her more than enough fuel to work with without even trying.

Dani narrowed her eyes now. Of course her Dad was doing the best that he could - she knew that. However, it appeared to her that he'd taken a rapid U-turn, and headed back to his previous mistakes, the most prominent one being the girl that presently stood in front of her. "I'm sure your reputation was tarnished. Unless, of course, the people you hang around place merit in the venture of sleeping with in an older man. Then, I'll bet you were their hero." She said, guessing that the company the older girl kept was hardly something she'd aspire to herself.
However, it did not go over Dani's head that she was a bit unmatched in wits here. Not only did the girl in front of her have far more....life experience...she also had far more skills. Though the pair was only really a matter of a few years apart in age, they may as well be from different planets, as far as Dani was concerned. Perhaps she should turn around and just head back to the castle.....but, that would look like she was giving in, like she was going to stop fighting this atrocity. And, she was most certainly not doing that.

i grew up overnight.
Athena's mouth curled even more as the girl tried to fight back against her words. She supposed she could give the child some credit for trying, but words had long since had any true effects on Athena. She'd heard enough angry words thrown her way to last a lifetime at this point. "You seem to think that I care about what people think of me, in which case your words would probably be true. Unfortunately for you, words have long since stopped getting under my skin." That didn't mean they didn't still incite her anger, but there was little reason for her to be angry. Yet.
Though it was clear that the young girl before her was still very, very sore about what had happened, Athena did have to give her credit for still fighting back against her. It didn't mean anyhting, of course, but it was an honorable thing to do. As if Athena knew anything about honor. "Do you intend to spend the rest of your life angry about this?" Now anger, anger was something she knew plenty about.

If she hadn't been so disgusted by the girl, she may have respected her in some sort of sick, twisted way. It took guts to go through what Athena had and absolutely give zero fucks about what people had to say. But, Dani could not bring herself to even be a slight fan of the girl who had turned her family life upside down. "I suppose that's good, because I'm sure quite a few choice words have been used to describe your actions over the past few years..." Dani spat back, the anger still embedded in her voice.
She was a bit taken aback, though, when Athena dared to call out her anger. The source of it was clear, they both knew where it sprouted from. But, it appeared Athena was suggesting she simply....let go of it. That seemed impossible. "What? Are you suggesting I simply drop this? Not let it effect me long term? As if that's even possible? Honestly." She said, shaking her head at the girl and crossing her arms, adopting a more defensive posture. Honestly, what an outlandish suggestion.
Slowly, Athena's lips curled into a grin that was anything but pleasant. It really was quite cute that this little girl thought she could do any damage. "Oh, yes, they had a lovely collection of things to say about me. 'Oh, you poor girl, getting manipulated by an adult that knew better.'" She barely stopped herself snorting. She had hardly been innocent in school, but that still didn't stop people assuming she was the one that had been used. After all, she had only been fifteen at the start of it all. What could a teenager possibly do?
"That is exactly what I'm suggesting," she replied with a shrug. If this girl didn't want to heed her advice, well that was her problem not Athena's. She had her share of experience with being angry about things her parents did. It hadn't really gotten her anywhere, and honestly there were more important things to occupy her time now. Though she wouldn't say no to a chance to kill them still. Pity necromancy was tricky business.

Dani rolled her eyes again, unable to contain the gesture. She didn't know Athena well, but from what she had observed, it seemed like she was the master manipulator, not the other way around. Athena had seduced her dad and torn apart their family, no matter how fragile the bonds had been in the first place. "Please. You were never innocent, even as a child. Let's not pretend otherwise." She said. The brunette didn't seem like she had an innocent bone in her cold, calculating body.
She became even more flustered as Athena became more composed, as if the other girl's sense of accomplishment set her off. She couldn't stand this. She needed to take out this anger on someone, she needed to make someone hurt somehow. But she was small and ineffective and barely schooled in her magic. "None of this seems fair. I should be able to control what happens to me. Instead....I have no control. I have no power." She said, almost forgetting who she was venting to.
If she hadn't already been grinning, Athena certainly would have now. This girl was smart, she would give her that much, but she was also apparently a bit explosive. Oh this was so much fun. Riling people up was always fun. "You're right, but that's not how it looked. After all, I'm not the one they punished for it," she stated simply. Although that was something that now weighed heavy on her mind, Athena wasn't going to avoid using it as a weapon here.
As the girl vented, Athena looked at her with new eyes. It was strange to see herself in someone she disliked. "So you work until you have power," she told her. "You work until you have the world groveling at your feet. But it won't happen overnight. And it sure as hell won't happen if you continue to whine like a child." Was that not what she herself was doing after all? She needed to be the best. She needed people to fear her.
Dani was growing more annoyed by the minute, but it strangely wasn't necessarily directed at the girl in front of her. Instead, the anger was directed at numerous sources - her dad, for getting into this situation to begin with, her mum, for just up and giving in to the sadness, and Hogwarts itself. She wasn't supposed to even be at this school. "Do you regret it? Ruining it all?" She asked, for once no hint of sarcasm lurking in the question.
She turned then to venting her frustrations at Athena, something she never would have envisioned herself doing in a million years. But the words spilled out of her like water from a faucet, and she couldn't seem to stop them. She was surprised when Athena answered with a genuine solution. "But how? How do I earn power and respect when nobody will take me seriously? Youth paints me as someone who is weak and ineffective. I need to...change the way in which I am perceived." She said. She needed people to see her for something better. Something stronger.
It was strange, talking with this girl. In all of the time Athena had inserted herself into Sullivan's life, she'd never really spared a thought about his child. Yet here they were, face-to-face and having a little chat. She wasn't sure she liked it all that much honestly. "There are very few things in my life that I regret, little one," she said with little care in her tone. It wasn't an answer, not really, but it was all she was giving.
"Make them see you how you want to be," she said simply. "Don't shy away from taking risks. Don't be afraid to be hated." It was something Athena had learned early on. She had also learned she could have the things she wanted even if some people disliked her. "Put in the effort to make yourself stronger and then show the world what you've become."
She paused, chewing at her lip as she stared at the woman in front of her. Really though, she wasn't much older than Dani was...now that she took a minute to consider that fact. She was losing the caution she usually spoke to Athena with, the guarded tone falling from her words as she plunged deeper into the conversation. Curiosity was surely winning out.
The blonde listened carefully as Athena spoke, though her brow furrowed a little. "So you truly...do not care what they think of you? C'mon. Everyone cares what people think of them, even you must. Isn't it human nature?" She asked, squinting at the girl. She found it hard to buy the idea that Athena could completely not care at all. She seemed to care what her dad thought of her, at least.
