It was little secret that Kody disliked Ignatius Darnell. Perhaps they had been on good terms once, when they were both much younger, but time had seen to them drifting away from even that much. Now it was more likely for Kody to snap at the other man than it was for the two of them to get along. However, that wasn't an excuse to lack professionalism and that was how Kody found himself in the predicament he was in currently.
The two departments had been working closely together in the light of the disappearances in the Wizarding world as of late. It only made sense for the two of them to aid one another in times of need. Though why that involved Kody being in charge of the hit wizards was beyond him. Surely Darnell had someone else he could get to do that for him? Either way, he suddenly had double the people reporting to his office and it was incredibly annoying.
A knock on the door drew his attention from the papers in front of him for the millionth time that day. "Enter," he called out flatly, annoyance already palpable.

It had been over a year now and sometimes it was still strange to Kody that he was a father now. It had been something he'd been prepared for so many years ago, or so he'd thought he'd been. Having Sophia now though, he realized that back then he'd hadn't even the faintest idea what it would be like in reality. It was so much more than he'd ever thought it would be, and he honestly couldn't think of something he wanted more. Sure, he wanted success and renown, but at the same time he got that from this. As long as he was successful in the eyes of his daughter, the rest of the world didn't matter. She mattered now.
Sometimes he wondered if his parents had felt this way with him and his sisters, but Kody had a feeling that wasn't the case. While they didn't hate each other, Kody knew that his parents didn't love each other, not the way he loved Evanna at least. And that changed their dynamic. He also couldn't recall either of them doting on any of them like he did Sophia. It just drove him that much more to be a better parent. To not make Sophia feel inadequate like he often had, to not make her feel guilt for her choices. He wanted to be better.
He also wanted her to know the rest of the family and didn't spend enough time with them anymore anyway, so he'd invited his sister over for the afternoon. They were both busy people so finding time was difficult, and with a toddler it was even more difficult for Kody to get out of the house without a lot of extra effort which was why he'd asked Maia over instead. He knew his sister had little love for children, but this was her niece. Hopefully that made it a little more bearable.

While grand gestures were basically second-nature to families like the Belangers, they weren't exactly great at making them when it came to emotions. They hid their strongest emotions away, using only the ones that furthered their ambitions. But then Kody had fallen in love, not once but twice. It was a feeling that had taken getting used to. It was mistakes and fights and sometimes looking for a way back out again. But it was also being happy and feeling at peace. It was realizing that there were more important things in life than ambitions or success despite what his parents tried to make him believe his whole life. And it was the good things in love that drove him to the point he was at today.
It had taken him some time to decide on a destination, but eventually he'd gone with snow-covered Switzerland. The beach in Italy where he'd won Evanna back had also been an option, but in the end he didn't want to have the two events competing with each other. Plus his family had a house here for their use that made it all the more appealing since it was a less frequently used one and Kody knew it would be empty.
For a brief time, he'd considered arranging one of their family members to take Sophia for a couple of days, but that would have more likely alerted Evanna to something going on than him convincing her that it was okay for the two of them to take a couple of days off, that things had been quiet enough for the last little while that they could trust their team to hold the fort while they took a break and got their ground back.
It was early evening now and the sun had set early as it did in winter. Kody had sent Evanna off to get ready for dinner while he put the finishing touches on everything else. The table was set immaculately and the house elves employed at the house had made the meal perfectly as was expected of them. It was most unlike the dinner Kody had prepared for the two of them once, but he wanted this meal to be as good as it could be. He didnt want to risk the food being burned or bitter.
Once everything was in place, he waited, fingers curled around the box in his coat pocket that held a ring.

There were many days when Kody questioned his decision to join the Ministry. But that was mostly because the new hires were always such idiots. Logically, he knew he'd been in their shoes once, not knowing everything they needed to get the job done, but at the same time, it was very annoying now. He would give anything for a decent batch of people to come through the doors instead. However, that didn't seem to be the case this year, and with danger rising again that was the absolute last thing he had time for.
As much as it killed Kody to leave Sophia with people that weren't himself or Evanna, he was very glad to have to her around again. It helped him balance the heavy workload they were getting loaded down with. And it also gave him the chance to escape before he murdered everyone without things piling up all over again which is what he was doing now.
The headache he'd gotten as soon as he walked into work that morning had only gotten worse with each disaster his employees told him about and he was about ready to just scrap everyone and start over. Not that that was a really practical action. So the last thing he wanted was to hear someone calling his name. It was a jolt as well since most people didn't address him by his first name. Turning with the intention of laying into the person for addressing him like they were friends, Kody stalled. It had been so many years since he'd actively kept up with what the Moreaus were doing that seeing the youngest standing in front of him was the last thing he'd expected, though he supposed he shouldn't have been surprised. That family had as much a tradition for government work as his did.
"You're lost..." he said slowly with a raised eyebrow. "And you expect me to help you?" If it was someone from his department, he would have maybe considered it because them not doing their job made his job harder, but this kid wasn't in his department.

Kody wasn't really sure why this wasn't being handled by the Head of the whole department instead of himself, but it wasnt really his place to question these things. He would just deal with it now and go gripe about it later. He moved aside to motion her into the office. "After you then," he said a little flatly.

"Consider it done then." It would be quite a task, because it wasn't a skill that was so easy to pick up and the two of them were very busy with their jobs, now more than ever, but for Evanna Kody would move the world. He'd make this work because it needed to work. He knew that she needed this and he needed to get her there since he already had the skill. It was something his family had prioritized. The Belangers were so heavy on secrets and knowing things that not know the skills didn't make a lot of sense. And now it was time for him to pass that on.

Kody's lips turned up into a sharp, dangerous smile. "I've known you since you were born, Edmund. I know things that could ruin you without a trace of it leading back to me." It was a mostly empty threat, because he had no real quarrel with the younger blonde. But Kody's reputation would fill in the gaps for him.
"Where should I even begin?" he questioned, regarding him coolly. "Perhaps with your propensity to pick fights with strangers or even with people you know. Or perhaps your inability to hold your tongue in situations where it's best for you to remain quiet" Both were valid for his argument, and he knew already that Edmund could not deny either. It would be a pointless gesture to even try.

"We're her parents. We get all the say in it," he said very matter of factly. Because that had clearly worked out so well with his family trying to control him and his siblings. He could kind of see it from that perspective now though, only wanting the best for his child. It was just a lot different being the one getting controlled.
Of course they would keep her safe. Kody would die to keep both of the girls in the room safe if that's what it took. He'd burn the world to the ground and build it back up for them. It gave his life a purpose that had been lacking before.

Festivals weren't really Kody's cup of tea. He was much more fond of the sophisticated party scene that he'd grown up in. But he couldn't deny Evanna or Sophia the chance to get out as a small family. If nothing else, the toddler would enjoy it.
As he watched the two ladies in his life move along slowly, Kody found himself smiling softly. It was strange to think that after all of the rough patches, they had been parents for a year now. He couldn't believe it had been that long.
"Just a few more months and she'll be quite suirefooted," he said confidently, watching the little girl toddle along a bit clumsily. "I both look forward to and dread that time."

Kody bristled. Maybe he and Edmund had gotten along at one point, but it was very clear that was no longer the case. "You had better watch your tongue on things you have no idea about," he said coldly. To accuse him of... Evanna had always been the most important person in his life, even when he'd been engaged to Camille.
He had had enough of Edmund for now though. He just wanted to be alone. To not have to deal with people or emotions now that the emotions were running so high. He wanted to fall back into old habits, ones he'd sworn to leave behind him once he'd kissed Evanna for the first time. "Respectable by the standard of society," he replied sharply. "Because last I checked attitudes like yours were frowned upon rather heavily." It was kind of pot meet kettle though. Except Kody thought he was much better at hiding it than Edmund. Edmund was too wild. "I said nothing of your choice in partner. While I disapprove, it's not my place to care about that one. It doesn't affect me any."

They were parents now. It was real. But it felt so much like a dream, especially after what Kody had been through before. Especially when he'd been so sure he was going to be a parent years before. But it had happened now, and he couldn't actually think of anyone he'd rather share it with.
"She's not allowed to grow up and move out," he said very seriously. She was going to stay his little girl forever. That was that. Even more when he thought about what growing up would do to things like her innocence. But it was his job to keep the world safe, to make sure everyone got to grow up happy, and he was going to do that. If not for the world, for the baby in Evanna's arms.

"I wouldn't have said it if I didn't mean it," he told her. There would have been little point in that. Honestly it was something that he should have offered many years ago, but he had never seen it as something necessary. If she'd wanted to learn, she would have. But now... after all that had happened, he needed her to learn. He needed to protect her from his sisters and from others. That was his job in this situation even though he knew damn well that Evanna could take care of herself.

Watching her turn and walk away from him, Kody felt an awful sinking feeling in his stomach. This wasn't like when they were teenagers and had argued. This was so much more. This was the most important thing to him walking away. He wanted nothing more than to follow her, to plead with her to stay. But his pride wouldn't let him. The words wouldn't unstick themselves from their home in his throat. He knew the words he needed to say to maybe get another chance and he couldn't get them out. Instead he was going to stand there and lose her because he was too emotionally stunted. He was too prideful.

"For someone your age, no the lack of politeness is not made up for in other areas," he told her very straightforward. He wasn't one to beat around the bush or sugarcoat things. "You haven't yet built up the reputation that would allow such things from you." But he didn't say that she wouldn't be able to. He could tell already from this that she would certainly try. Only time would tell if she would sink or swim though, because it was a fifty-fifty chance for those who came into the department guns blazing from the get go.
